Access issues and crag closures are an unfortunate reality for most Ontario climbers. Luckily, the Ontario Access Coalition (OAC) is working to change this situation. We recently caught up with OAC Executive Board Member Adam Reeve and discussed the OAC’s goals, some of the current challenges facing Ontario climbers and a recent access victory that will influence access to all National Parks.
With its scheduled opening in late March 2010, True North Climbing will become Toronto’s newest climbing gym. Housed in an old airplane hangar with a ceiling height up to 36’, this modern and professionally built facility is an impressive and highly anticipated addition to the local indoor scene. We recently caught up with the owner John Gross and discussed his involvement in climbing, his decision to open a climbing a gym and what True North Climbing will offer Ontario climbers.
The traditional Leave No Trace guidelines are a good start for climbers looking to minimize their impact in the outdoors. Unfortunately, the existing recommendations don't always address climbers' specific needs. Luckily, these updated guidelines include some straightforward advice that will help prevent the trashing of climbing areas.
