Rockwood and Halfway Dump Access Updates
Nov 07, 2009
The Ontario Access Coalition has posted access updates for Rockwood and Halfway Dump. The reports outline the current access situation in these popular climbing areas and contain critical information for climbers hoping to eventually climb at these crags. While the progress at Halfway Dump is promising, it is still important that climbers observe any current or future climbing management policies so that the proposed Spring 2010 limited re-opening is not jeopardized. Unfortunately, the Rockwood access situation is less positive as the Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA ) Board has chosen to not allow climbing. The GRCA listed a number of concerns ranging from liability to user impact for their decision and were unwilling to work with the OAC to manage these issues. One issue that perhaps further influenced the Board’s negative decision was not only climbers continuing to climb at Rockwood during the temporary ban, but that some of these climbers had altercations with the GRCA interpretative staff. Please take the time to read the full reports.
